NOISE (2025) 110
アートの領域においてノイズは“力”である。
それは新たな視点や感情を観者から引き出す創造的要素でこそあれ、単なる瑕疵として排除されてしまう対象などではけっしてない。むしろアーティストが意図的にノイズを取り入れることで、作品に深みや意味が生まれ、独自のエネルギーが渦巻き出すのだ。
　印象派の画家としてあまりに有名なクロード・モネ（1840-1926）は、絶えず移ろう光や色の変化を捉えるため、あえてボヤけた描写を多用した。そのノイズにも似た不明瞭ながら躍動感あふれるタッチが画面に動的な印象を与えるとともに、カンヴァスの向こう側の空気感までをも伝えてくれる。つまりここではノイズが“情緒の伝達”というアート作品にとって不可欠な役割を果たしているわけだ。
　ほかにもノイズが感情的なコンテクストを強化する好例として、ジャン＝ミシェル・バスキア（1960-1988）によるアプローチを挙げておきたい。詩やデッサン、絵画を組み合わせ、テキストとイメージ、抽象と具象を融合させたバスキアの混沌とした作品世界は、社会や文化に対する批評を含みつつも、視覚的なノイズを通じて強烈なメッセージを発信する。いわばレイヤー構造によって生ずるノイズを自在にコントロールすることで見る者に新たなアングルを提供し、感情的な化学反応を引き起こすことに成功しているのではなかろうか。
　翻って写真という表現ジャンルに目を移すと、ノイズの存在は否定的に捉えられるケースが多い。とくにデジタル技術の飛躍的な進歩にともない、解像力の向上が極限まで追求される現代において、写真におけるノイズは欠陥として扱われがちである。ただ先の二例を持ち出すまでもなく、それはきわめて皮相的なものの見方にすぎないと私は考える。
　作品を制作する際、私はあらかじめ被写体となるエリアをロケハンして市街の光を観察し、フライトコースを綿密に練りながら、仕上がりのイメージを想定しておく。とはいうものの、そんな思惑どおりに事が運ぶはずないのも重々承知のうえである。
　私の主戦場とする高度 5,000 フィートという非日常的空間においては、もはや当初のイメージどおりに捉えよう、態勢を整え直そうなどといった行為はまったくナンセンスだ。つねに激しい揺れとの攻防が続き、地上で思い描いたプランはことごとく無に帰す。なぜならレンズは球面体であるし、そもそも地球は丸いから。さらには沈みゆく太陽のスピードと絞り調整との際限なき戦い。それらギャップにより生じるズレやノイズを許容しつつも、想定以上のイメージを醸成できてようやく作品は躍動しはじめる。
　あとはノイズがもたらす偶然性や予測不可能性を味方につけて、ファインダー越しに作品の精度を高めていけばよい。そう、マイナスをプラスに変える力が想定外のミラクルを呼び起こすのだ。一瞬一瞬に形を与えていく写真という表現手段にとり、絶えまなく襲い掛かるアクシデントこそ逆に、まだ見ぬ視覚体験との出逢いを引き寄せてくれる“女神が微笑む瞬間”といえるのではないだろうか。
これぞストレート・フォトグラフィの醍醐味
だ、と私は信じてやまない。

By harnessing the randomness and unpredictability that noise brings, one can refine artistic vision even through the lens.
This ability to transform negatives into positives can summon unexpected miracles.
In photography a medium that captures fleeting instants accidents and imperfections become opportunities.
They guide us toward visual encounters we might never have consciously sought.
This is the essence of straight photography.
